Recommendations of the Femicide in Poland Foundation regarding the prevention of fatal VAWG in Poland

What do our recommendations include?

Our recommendations focus on creating an effective, modern, and risk-analysis-based system in Poland for preventing violence against women and femicide. The document was developed on the basis of analyses of high-risk violence against women cases, international research, and the experiences of other European countries.

In our recommendations, we highlight, among others, the need for:

  • creating a central and coherent database on violence against women and femicide cases (femicide central database),
  • implementing solutions in Poland inspired by the Spanish VioGén system for monitoring high-risk cases,
  • developing unified risk assessment tools for escalating violence (high-risk cases),
  • establishing a permanent interdisciplinary team analyzing femicide cases and attempted femicides,
  • improving cooperation between the police, prosecutors, courts, healthcare institutions, and social services,
  • introducing mandatory examination of gender-based motives in killings of women,
  • implementing systemic training programs for representatives of the justice system and public services,
  • developing media standards for reporting on violence against women,
  • implementing a victim-centred approach focused on the safety and dignity of victims, rooted in feminist victimology,
  • taking into account the perspective of children witnessing violence,
  • conducting educational and social awareness campaigns on violence against women,
  • recognizing the intersectional nature of violence against women,
  • developing a National Strategy for Preventing Violence Against Women for 2026–2030.

Our recommendations emphasize that effectively preventing violence against women requires not only responding after tragedy occurs, but above all systematically identifying risk factors, improving institutional coordination, and building a culture of responsibility, knowledge, and social sensitivity.recommendations on fatal VAWG prevention in PL
